You can be caught breaking the speed limit by either a fixed speed camera or a policeman with a handheld gun.

If you are stopped by a policeman/women it will be down to their discretion to give you a verbal warning no fine and no penalty points or they can ask you to go on a driving awareness course you will still receive a fine but no penalty points. Lastly they can write you a ticket (NIP) noticed of intended prosecution which carries a £60 fine and can carry 3-6 penalty points on your licence.

They will hand write you a ticket if you decide not to fight the speeding charge you will be required to send off your licence for endorsements and a cheque to cover the fine. If you accept the charge and you weren't more than double the speed limit or going over 100 miles an hour then you will receive the standard 3 point penalty. If you have been caught travelling at over 100 miles an hour then you will be required to attend caught and could face a 6 month driving ban.

If you are caught by a static camera you will receive a notice through the post (NIP) asking you to identify the driver at the time. If you say it was you then it follows the same steps as if you were stopped by a policeman. With both cases you can decide to go to court but if you have been stopped by the police there is very little room to maneuver as they will ask you for identification when you are stopped but don't give up as there are still many ways to avoid the speeding fine and points.
